Terminal Renovation
$72 Million
2019-2022
Project and Construction Management
Background
In November 2019, the world's largest charter airline, TUI, announced Melbourne Orlando International Airport (MLB) as the new gateway for all its UK customers traveling to Central Florida, beginning in March 2022. This historic announcement provided MLB the catalyst it needed to undertake the new Terminal Renovation and Expansion Project.
MLB anticipates 150,000 arriving international visitors in the first year, with plenty of room for growth. TUI's two to three daily transatlantic flights will be operated with its 300- and 345-seat Boeing 787 Dreamliner.
KMI is providing Construction Support Services for the Terminal Renovation & Expansion project, as well as the Apron Reconstruction/Expansion at MLB. KMI is also providing a full-time Construction Manager for each portion of the project for construction oversight, in accordance with the continuing contract with MLB. KMI reports directly to the Director of Capitol Improvement at MLB, Mr. David Perley.
Challenge
A project of this magnitude, with a worldwide pandemic in place, undoubtedly, came with several challenges. The General Contractor had delays that made a direct impact on the terminal schedule, causing the re-sequencing of the entire project.
Currently, we are seeing, nationwide, the construction market facing shortage of materials and unexpected delays on delivery times. In addition, the call for skilled laborers is increasing across the nation, and specifically 2021 was a year when we faced the biggest labor shortage as a complicated mix of many different economic factors. For these reasons, the project schedule and cost have been affected dramatically.
Solution
KMI provided daily quality assurance inspections and worked with the contractor teams to deliver this large, complex project under the guaranteed maximum price. The quality assurance inspections ensured accuracy of construction documents and aided in developing a collaborative rapport with the GC, which greatly facilitated the identification and correction of any potential quality issues.
The KMI Team has been working as a trusted partner for the airport. The leadership provided on every project process has been key to keep up the progress on the construction within the quality, cost, and time expected.
